The day Katie Melua played for the first time on my radio, it was the first time in many years I really appreciated new music. Moreover, with a few exceptions, the last for quite a while. Her spellbinding voice captivated the world in a very special way. I was on an island in the western Pacific at the time, and her songs was quickly adapted to set the mood in many of videos and occasions from that trip.
Finally, given a chance to encounter it first hand, was something I just could not pass on. The evening turned out to be a wonderful experience. As she entered the subtly lit stage, elegantly draped in the most beautiful dress, the mood was set. From the introduction to the final piece, it was a very special evening.
I was kind of expecting a large symphonic orchestra of some kind, but she managed to convey the magic with a relatively standard set of just four people. Even so, it was obvious that the same attention to detail and minute planning had been applied to this performance, as if it was with the full orchestra.
As the magical voice carried us into the night, she told her story with both song and small talk, giving us an even deeper understanding of the different pieces that makes up the fairytale. Ranging from her childhood in Belfast, her mother, as well as her social and political concerns. Every song has a deeper meaning. Whether personal challenges and experiences, or worldly observations.
She also moves through many genres, making the concert an emotional rollercoaster. There is not many to compare Katie Melua with, at least not that I have noticed. Her voice is easily recognizable and unique. Almost overwhelmingly soothing and calming.
The audience was easily engaged. They were there expecting something special, and that is exactly what they got. Melua’s reward was silence and attention at all the right times, and towards the end, they applauded her standing. They also clapped the rhythm through an entire song.
I think it must have been very close to a full house, and I think they will all be back next time. This evening will hold its place as one of my best musical experiences for a long, long time.
Thank you, Katie Melua, sincerely!
